Beautycounter Brand Ambassador Christine Gardner Tells Us Her Story

Over the past seven years, a driving passion in my life has been to educate myself, my friends, my family, and my community about environmental health. My “ah-ha” moment came when I found out that one of my favorite Saturday afternoon outings to the nail salon with my young daughter was placing her in harm’s way. I had absolutely no idea.

That newfound awareness sparked a desire to dive deep into a body of research explaining how the choices we make every day may have a direct and lasting impact on our health. The science is complex, and definitive data is a moving target because we are all living in an uncontrolled laboratory.

Each time I have shared the facts from my research, I have registered the look of shock on many people’s faces. Clearly, I am not the only one who has had unbridled faith in American consumer protection. So, I have endeavored to create a narrative that connects the dots for those of us who were French majors and not pre-med in college, and arms us with education to understand more about the impact the products we eat, breathe, wear, and even touch every day are having on our otherwise healthy bodies.

I knew I was on to something when my phone started ringing within an hour of my first presentation. A mom of three was literally in her daughters’ bathroom stripping the shelves of their products. She was planning her trip to Whole Foods and wanted a shopping list of replacements I trusted for my own family. Identical conversations happened again and again.

Providing those recommendations proved to be an extreme challenge. Given the 100s of hours I had invested in learning to read labels, I should have had a stellar go-to list as reference for everyone. But that was never the case, especially when it came to personal care products and cosmetics. Because of the lax laws governing the beauty industry, I learned that the consumer is set up to fail and I rarely felt 100% certain about my recommendations.

Then, one day, my phone rang. On the other end was Gregg Renfrew. I will tell you that it was nothing less than a “you had me at hello” moment.

I have learned the transformative power
of education and information.

When she began to outline her vision for Beautycounter—its focus on health and safety, style, sustainability, truth and transparency, and perhaps, most importantly, advocating for true change—I literally booked a flight to LA and offered whatever resources I had to support the launch of this exciting company. I wholeheartedly endorse Beautycounter’s mission and feel inspired to be part of a solution I truly trust.

If nothing else, I have learned the transformative power of education and information. I am exceedingly proud to be Beautycounter’s Brand Ambassador—to tell the story of this company, why it matters, and the spectacular impact we endeavor to make in the world our children will inherit.
