Putting Health, Safety and Quality First

At Beautycounter, health, safety and quality come before everything else, and in that spirit, we want to notify you about an issue with one of our new hair care products.

We are voluntarily issuing a recall of one lot of our Volume & Shape Shampoo, after learning that it did not meet our strict standards expectations. While this is an isolated incident, and no other Beautycounter products are affected, we take any indication of potential quality or health issues very seriously.

It goes without saying, this is the last thing we’d expect or want for a product we just brought to market. Yet, despite our diligence throughout the formulating process, this particular shampoo encountered an issue, likely during the process of filling the bottles.

Upon discovering that one lot of Volume & Shape Shampoo might not meet our standards, we immediately issued a stop-sell on our entire new line of hair products and initiated re-testing of all nine products. Unfortunately, one lot of the Volume & Shape Shampoo (lot #7F2819; 250ml size only) was shown to contain a bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a bacteria commonly found in the environment. It can be introduced into a manufacturing facility from various sources, such as raw materials, water and equipment. Those with weakened immune systems, who suffer from a pre-existing health condition, or who belong to another sensitive group may be at particular risk of bacterial infection.

You can determine if you have an affected product by looking at the lot number (#7F2819) on the bottom of the Volume & Shape Shampoo bottle, or the bottom of the outer packaging. If you have products with this lot number, please discontinue use and throw them away immediately. If you gave or sold this product to anyone, please advise them about the recall and that they should also discard the applicable product.

After extensive re-testing, we are happy to confirm that this is indeed an isolated incident, and that all other products in the line returned clean results.

As we’ve said before, we are committed to bringing truth back to beauty. There are currently very few regulations around the safety of personal care products in the United States, which is why we’re pushing for the FDA to have more authority to regulate and monitor the cosmetic manufacturing process.

You may be familiar with our dedication to ingredient safety, and the same holds true for the overall quality of our products. You have our commitment that we will continue to work with our manufacturers, including all new and potential partners, to clearly articulate and enforce Beautycounter’s strict standards. In addition, we are expanding our internal Quality Team, which has been conducting on-site audits at the facilities of our contract manufacturing partners.

We look forward to a future of better, safer beauty, and thank you for your continued support as we work to create change across the entire beauty and personal care products industry.
