For San Francisco-based Beautycounter Consultant Jen Hatfield, her business is so integrated into her life that she describes it as akin to breathing. An invaluable part of her success as a first-timer in this industry is her belief that what we put in and on our bodies makes a significant difference.
The health-conscious lifestyle that Jen adheres to comes from watching her mom’s diet. At 25 years old, Jen’s mom was diagnosed with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis, and according to her many doctors, is a “walking miracle” after 30 surgeries to replace joints all over her body. The biggest contributor to this miracle is that Jen’s mom learned about environmental health at an early age, which solidified the importance of eating and living “clean.” Jen now passes that knowledge onto her own family, along with her Clients.
While Jen has three kids to raise, she still manages to live the Beautycounter mission through-and-through. So we asked this San Francisco-based Executive Director to tell us how she ensures veggies get eaten amidst a hectic schedule.
1. Everyday I ask my kids what “colors” they’ve eaten that day and serve as much color as possible with every meal. The darker the leaf, the more nutrients it has. I make sure to take the kids to the grocery store with me often and fill up our baskets with the darkest colors we can find in the fruit and veggie aisle. (Remember, check the stickers on produce: Organic produce has a PLU number that starts with “9”.)
2. There are a lot of food allergies in my family and dairy is always at the top of the list. We substitute almond milk for cow’s milk as often as possible. I recently started making my own. It’s easy, I promise. First, I start by soaking the almonds in water (the longer they soak, the creamier the milk). Then I blend together the almonds with a 1:2 ratio of almonds to water. Strain and sweeten, and voila—homemade almond milk.
3. Most mornings I make a non-dairy smoothie for the entire family. The Vitamix is a great investment and I use it almost every day. My mom believes wholeheartedly that overall health starts in the gut so I always include probiotics. If we are running late, I send my family off with a big serving in a compostable cup to make sure they are getting some good stuff before the school day.
4. I push greens, greens, and more greens. Greens are one of the best cancer fighting foods we have. I always put a half an avocado in the smoothies and ask the kids to eat their veggie servings first.
5. I am crazy about everyone getting enough sleep. The hours before midnight are the most critical (for grown-ups, too).
6. Due to the fact that autoimmune diseases run in our family, my husband and I are completely gluten free. Our kids are not 100% GF, but regardless, I highly recommend Pamela’s Baking and Pancake mix!
7. Lastly, I want to share the most important tip I have for myself and my family: It’s not about perfection. I tell myself this all the time. I do the best I can to keep my family as healthy as possible, but it’s also okay to make good, old fashioned chocolate chip cookies and lick the bowl too!
